Choosing the Right Core Drilling Rig for Deep Mineral Exploration: A Project Case Study
Mineral exploration in Africa often involves challenging geological conditions, remote project locations, and demanding field environments. For exploration companies, selecting the right core drilling rig is essential for obtaining reliable rock samples while maintaining stable drilling performance.
For this African mineral exploration project, the customer needed a drilling solution capable of reaching approximately 600 meters and obtaining representative core samples from underground formations. Based on the project requirements and working conditions, RUIXIN recommended a 600m Core Drilling Rig.
1. Project Background
The project was located in Africa and focused on geological exploration and mineral resource investigation.
The exploration team needed to drill into underground rock formations to collect continuous core samples for geological analysis and evaluation. Because the target drilling depth was around 600 meters, the equipment needed to provide sufficient drilling power and stable performance during deep-hole operations.
At the same time, African exploration projects can involve remote sites, uneven terrain, and limited maintenance conditions. Therefore, the customer needed not only drilling depth, but also a mobile, reliable, and practical machine for field operation.
RUIXIN was asked to provide a complete core drilling solution, including the main drilling rig, matching drilling tools, accessories, and spare parts.
2. Customer Requirements
The customer mainly required:
- Approximately 600m drilling depth
- Stable core drilling performance
- Adaptability to different rock formations
- Efficient core recovery
- Flexible drilling angles
- Good mobility in field conditions
- Matching drilling tools and spare parts
The goal was to select a machine that could balance drilling capability, mobility, reliability, and operating efficiency.
3. Working Conditions
The project required core drilling with an optimal hole diameter of φ60–110mm.
The drilling rig also needed to work at different angles according to the exploration location. The selected machine supports a 45°–90° drilling angle and uses a steel crawler chassis with a maximum climbing angle of approximately 30°.
These features make the rig suitable for moving between drilling locations and adapting to practical field conditions.
4. Equipment Selection
Based on the customer’s requirements, RUIXIN selected the 600m Hydraulic Core Drilling Rig.
The rig provides a maximum drilling depth of 600m with NTW, closely matching the project’s target depth.
Instead of selecting an oversized deep-drilling machine, the 600m model offered a more balanced solution for the customer’s exploration requirements, helping control equipment size and cost while maintaining the required drilling capability.
5. Key Parameters
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Max. Drilling Depth | 600m NTW |
| Hole Diameter | φ60–110mm |
| Engine Power | 91kW |
| Max. Torque | 1,600 N·m |
| Max. Rotation Speed | 1,400 rpm |
| Drilling Angle | 45°–90° |
| Wire Rope Capacity | 800m |
| Maximum Climbing Angle | 30° |
| Weight | 6.2 tons |
| Chassis | Steel Crawler |
The rig is equipped with a Yuchai turbocharged diesel engine, hydraulic winch, and BW9-3 mud pump.
6. Why This Configuration?
The configuration was selected according to the project’s actual drilling requirements.
The 91kW diesel engine provides power for the drilling and hydraulic systems, while the 1,600 N·m maximum torque provides sufficient rotary force for different rock formations.
The hydraulic winch and 800m wire rope capacity support deep core retrieval, while the BW9-3 mud pump provides drilling-fluid circulation to help remove cuttings and maintain stable drilling.
The crawler chassis was also important for an African field project where drilling locations may involve uneven or difficult terrain.
7. Delivery
Before shipment, RUIXIN completed factory inspection and testing of the engine, hydraulic system, power head, winch, mud pump, crawler system, and overall operating performance.
The 600m core drilling rig was then shipped overseas together with the required drilling accessories and spare parts.
8. Field Application
At the African project site, the rig is used for geological exploration and mineral investigation.
The main objective is to drill toward the target depth and recover representative rock cores for geological analysis. During drilling, operators can adjust drilling parameters according to the formation to maintain stable drilling and protect core quality.
For difficult or fractured formations, selecting suitable drilling tools and controlling drilling pressure and rotation speed are important for reducing core loss and breakage.
Conclusion
This project shows that selecting a core drilling rig for deep mineral exploration requires more than simply choosing a machine with a sufficient drilling depth.
For this African exploration project, RUIXIN selected a 600m Hydraulic Core Drilling Rig based on the target depth, hole diameter, geological exploration requirements, mobility, and core recovery needs.
With 600m NTW drilling depth, 91kW power, 1,600 N·m maximum torque, hydraulic control, and crawler mobility, the rig provides a balanced solution for medium-depth mineral exploration.
If you are planning a mineral exploration project in Africa or other regions, RUIXIN can recommend a suitable core drilling rig based on your drilling depth, hole diameter, rock formation, and site conditions.
